15 March 2024 - message from Head Greenkeeper
David Haslegrave:
Firstly, thank you for all being patient with the weather
and the condition of the course. Trust me when I say
you’re not the only ones who are frustrated with the
course being closed, as a Greenkeeper there is nothing
worse than not being able to be out on the course
providing you the best playing surfaces we can.
This doesn’t mean that we’ve been sat down for the
last however many weeks doing nothing, a lot has
been done to areas of the course that have remained
accessible. Yes, there are still areas that need work
and had their completion date pushed back, purely
down to how much rain we’ve had and be able to
access different areas. It may seem like a broken
record but there has been an unprecedented amount
of rain this winter, fingers crossed this year is an
anomaly and won’t happen again (we’ve got plans in
place for the future if it does happen to rain this much
again).
As for the here and now, 9 holes will be back open
tomorrow, FROM 9am; 1,2,3,4,5,6,16,17 and 18. It will be
carry only for the foreseeable until everywhere really
dries out properly. All main greens and tees will be
in use with the exception of the 18th Green as the
bottom of the fairway is simply unplayable and the
18th Medal tee because of the above mentioned rain
issue. Even in these 9 holes there are areas that are
wet and our mowers have left some wheel marks, so
as a collective from now, we need to use common
sense and avoid walking/driving through these areas
until we see drier days (don’t worry that applies to my
team as well and they’ve been made aware!) we all
want what is best for the course from a maintenance
perspective. One thing I will ask from you the
members, is to make sure people are behaving as
you would expect on any golf course to keep the
course in order when we aren’t around, from raking
bunkers, repairing your pitch marks (very soft greens
at the moment) and please, if you see someone
chipping from the apron of the putting green and
taking divots out, tell them to stop! Then send them
in the shop to ask for a lesson on how to chip properly!
Again, thank you for your patience, I’ve no doubt
we will come on leaps and bounds this summer
and have everyone talking about us!
David.
